Thanksgiving is next week!!

I am thankful for the many parent volunteers who donate their time in the library each week.
This week's Vocabulary Word of the Week is VETERAN:

From Mrs. Coyne’s Class

Veteran: a former member of the armed forces especially during wartime

We were honoring several veterans at our Veterans Day celebration.

AND Mrs. Creonte’s Class…

Veteran:  one who has served in the armed forces.

We respect all veterans that once served in the armed forces, not only on Veteran’s Day, but every day of the year because they keep us safe and free.

Stay tuned for more information about our Scholastic Book Fair, coming soon!  (Dec 5-9)

November.... Historical Fiction

This week all classes are learning about historical fiction when they visit the library.  Ask your child about it!

Our vocabulary words of the week are:

From Mrs. O’Brien’s class:

Mystery: anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown

When my dog’s bone went missing, it was a big mystery.

From Ms. Sarkissian’s Class

Region: an area that shares one or more features.

The state of Massachusetts is in the Northeast region.

What is Destiny?
I've been teaching students in grades 3 and 4 the Destiny Library program.  This can be easily accessed from any internet connection.  Simply go to the Waltham Public Schools website, click on "Students", then "@ your library" and then "Library Catalog".  Students in grades 3 and up are able to log into Destiny, create lists, add friends, and more!  I encourage families to try this at home.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Notices sent home

Last week I sent home the following notice.  I hope students and parents will continue to check this blog to see the latest news from the library!

Fitzgerald School Library News

News from your School Library Teacher…With the help of a parent volunteer this year we are sending out overdue notices each week. Sometimes overdue books and notices cross paths and you may receive a notice for a book that has since been returned. These are just gentle reminders for you and your child. I do not charge fines for late items. If your child is still reading a book, please tell him/her to renew it. If your child thinks he/she returned the book, have them please ask me to check the shelves for it (mistakes happen!) If an item is over a month overdue, you will receive a bill asking you to return the book or pay to replace it. The replacement fee for hardcover books is $15.00 and paperbacks are $5.00.

Save the dates: Our holiday book fair, by Scholastic, will take place in the library on Dec. 5-9. This is a great opportunity to get some holiday shopping done and support the library at the same time! More information about the book fair will be sent home in November.

Check out my blog!

Please take time to check out my library blog at : http://fitzgeraldlibrary.blogspot.com/ I try to frequently update it with library happenings. You can also access this through the Fitzgerald School website, just look for the @your library link on the left-hand side of the page.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at 781-314-5687 or kathleenfinnerty@k12.waltham.ma.us.

We work together to make the community a better place to live.

Vocabulary Words of the Week!

I have started a new initiative at Fitzgerald this year.  Each Monday we will announce the two vocabulary words of the week, give a definition, and use the word in a sentence.  We will post the words and information on the windows looking into the library.  By the end of the year we will have many new words added to our vocabularies!  Last week's words were "vocabulary" and "dictionary".  This week's words?

Thesaurus: a book of words and their synonyms
When I am looking for another word with the same meaning, I go to the library and check the thesaurus.

Genre: a particular type or category of literature
Each month I am interested in learning about the elements of a new genre when I visit the library.

Welcome Back!

It's great to be back!

I am hosting a Volunteer Coffee in the Cafeteria on Wednesday, Sept. 7: 8:50 -9:45 am.

If you are interested in volunteering in the library, please try to attend.  It's an opportunity for me to explain how the library is run, and how much I am dependent on volunteers.  Volunteering is a great way to get to know the school, especially for families new to Fitzgerald.  I always need volunteers for my kindergarten classes in particular.

I hope to see you on Sept. 7.  Feel free to email me or call me @ 781-314-5687 if you have any questions!

Summer Reading!

It's almost the end of the school year!  Please help your child find his/her overdue library books and return today.

Have a wonderful summer and I'll see you in September!
